Essential Materials Handling Equipment

“Materials handling” is often misunderstood to simply mean the act of picking something up and moving it. To the warehouse supplier, however, the term is far more far-reaching and complex. It includes all the hand and power operated equipment that is needed for moving materials, but includes much more. In the industry, the handling of materials is thought of as a complete system, not just an isolated event.

On the warehouse floor, any motorized or manually operated piece of equipment that facilitates the movement of materials is defined as materials handling equipment. A forklift is an example of this. In fact, the forklift is the backbone of the warehouse. All the pallet rack systems are designed to accommodate the forklift. The warehousing industry would not be what it is today without forklifts.

Aside from forklifts, there are innumerable other essential tools and equipment that are needed for moving materials. Wherever there are pallets, hand pushed pallet trucks can also be found. Without them, single pallets could not be efficiently moved from one area to another.

Next down the line in the list of essential equipment for moving goods would be the hand truck. Without hand trucks, heavy boxes could not be safely or efficiently transported from the warehouse floor to the loading dock. Without the convenience of a hand truck, even light-weight boxes would have to be moved one at a time, whereas the hand truck allows the worker to easily move a stack of boxes safely from one location to another.

A well designed warehouse is a warehouse that utilizes all available space. Warehouses are measured in cubic feet and when storage space is needed, many goods are stored out of reach. Ladders, powered personnel lifts and other materials handling equipment are needed in order to reach items that are out of reach.

Any large enterprise is going to produce waste. An efficient waste management system is as essential in a warehouse as anything else. Everything from the smallest waste receptacle that is tucked under the office worker’s desk to the largest waste bin outside next to the loading dock is part of that system. Not only are waste garbage can needed, but cans for recyclables and dangerous waste are also needed.

Aside from pallet racks for storing warehoused goods, a number of other storage shelving systems are needed. The bulk of these will be stationary shelves that will hold all the smaller goods that are needed in the course of the average working day. Aside from these fixed units, moveable shelving systems such as utility carts are a necessary component of an overall material handling system.

As you can see, materials handling is the most vital component of warehousing. Every aspect of the warehouse depends on having the most time and labor saving devices you can get. While the initial cost of a fully efficient handling system may be high, the savings over time far outweigh the initial investment. A good warehouse supplier will have everything you need and have the expertise to help you choose the best supplies for your warehousing needs.
