A lot of people have blogs and WordPress blogs these days, but not so many understand the fundamentals of the pingback & trackback.  So what are they? well they are a particular type of backlink to your blog from another weblog or linkback.  It is widely used by most of the larger blogging platforms used by bloggers including Wordpress, Drupal, BlogEngine, Joomla, Movable Type, Serendipity, Telligent Community and more.  What actually happens is a  request or a  certain type of notification is requested by one blog to another, when a blog or website creates a link to their post or article.  The reason why you would set this up is to enable the blog creator of the original work to keep tabs on whoever whats to reference or use some of their work on another blog, and so you can keep track of the weblogs who are linking to you.

In more techy terms, what happens is that the blogging software sends an XML request, which is setup between 2 sites, the original website, and the referring site.  When the reference blog writes and refers to the original blog, it has a hyperlink showing and from here the reference blog sends a signal to the author blog to check that the backlink does exist, if it does and is shown on the author’s website, then the pingback trackback will be recorded as a successful backlink on the  site.
